A more tender vine than Syrah, Grenache plantings actually preceeded Syrah in Washington State by at least a decade or more. However, the bitterly cold winters of the Yakima, Columbia and Walla Walla valleys often caused damage to the vines, until suitable sites were selected. Now that older vines have again been established, the resulting wines are stunning and more delicate in style making them more approachable in youth than the typical Syrah and in some cases they even resemble a top Pinot Noir. The future looks great for Grenache in Washington!
