It can be argued that the Swartland region of South Africa, just to the Northwest of Stellenbosch is not only the most talked about 'new' wine region in South Africa, but also the most talked about 'new' wine region in the entire wine world. Spearheaded by the enterprising members of the Swartland Independent Producers, this region is quickly being known for field blends both red and white from heritage vineyard sites which are primarily head trained with no trellising, organically and biodynamically farmed and fermented with native yeasts and neutral barrels, if barrels are used at all. The goal here is to produce truly South African wines not copies of wines made elsewhere, and letting the character of the fruit show through, instead of that of heavily toasted oak barrels.
