A former Yugoslav republic, Croatia has a centuries old wine industry. To many, the true parentage of Zinfandel is traced back to the Croatian grape, Plavac Mali. Others will argue that it is in reality an offspring of Primativo from Italy. In any case, there is no doubt that the robust and rich reds produced from this grape have similar characteristics. The Dalmatian Coast is home to many islands and fishing villages and as a result, some fabulous whites are made here to match this cuisine. Mostly indigenous grapes, they can provide a refreshing and delicious alternative to more commonly seen grapes.
