INITIAL PRESS RELEASE
10/15/2001 - Press Release
Anacortes, Wash.—October 15, 2001—Skagit County restaurateur Doug Charles and Seattle entrepreneur Will Parks today announced the opening of Compass Wines in Anacortes Washington. Boasting more than 400 different listings of Washington reds alone, Compass Wines is quickly gaining a reputation as the go-to place for favorably priced, hard-to-find wines.
An impressive array of rare Cabernets and Merlots from the Pacific Northwest (with a Washington emphasis); an assortment of aged Bordeaux and White Burgundy; and a tantalizing cadre of California cabs are all housed in the 3,000 sq. ft. premises—poised at the gateway to the San Juan Islands. In addition to retail and archival stock, Compass offers climate-controlled wine storage lockers in various sizes.
Leveraging long-time business relationships developed over the course of his 20+ years in restaurant management, Doug Charles is able to obtain and offer his customers wines that are otherwise only available via select mailing lists, if at all. “From Leonetti to Bunchgrass—from Chateau Margaux to Chateau d’Yquem, our shop offers a nice range of wines, including under $10 bottles perfect for sipping with dinner tonight,” said Charles. “Our customers include everyone from New York collectors to local fishermen.”
“We are committed to the local vineyards,” said Doug, owner “Washington State produces great wines, many of which don’t get the attention they deserve—if California played in the shadows of France for a long time, the Pacific Northwest has gotten to play in the shadow of California. What Compass Wines has done, is assemble a copious list of Washington wines, and then added some other specialty product to round out the selection. The result is a one-of-a-kind shop.”
